Pete’s head snapped on his neck so hard I heard it crack. Stunned by Zavier’s sudden and unprovoked fury, I leaned back, confused, looking up into his rage. “What’d you do that for?”

Zavier looked from me to Pete, then back. His skin turned a dark red shade, and his fierce expression changed instantly to contrition, to remorse. “Oh my god,” he muttered thickly. “I thought—I thought—”

My anger bubbled to the surface, nearly out of control as I stood. “You thought I was giving him a you know what? In front of Nick and my daughter? What’s wrong with you?”

Zavier turned away, his head lowered. “Yeah, I did.”

Pete straightened, rubbing his head where Zavier had cracked him a good one. “Are you that stupid, man? Or do you practice in the mirror?”

“I’m sorry, bro. I really am.”

“When I get on my feet, I owe you one.” Pete scowled, bending forward to massage his knee for himself. “Now I have this damn headache. Jeez, you’re so full of sh—you’re full of it, you know? Look, you upset Miri.”

Nick scowled nearly as dangerously as Pete while he comforted Miri. My daughter never liked raised voices, they tended to make her think the adults were mad at her, not each other. She cried, sobbing against Nick’s shoulder, his strong arms around her as he made shushing noises.

“It just looked like…” Zavier said, lame. “You know what I mean. I got, er, jealous.”

His confession only served to make me angrier than ever. I stepped around the sofa’s end, marching into Zavier’s personal bubble, forcing him to back from my rage.

“Let’s get something straight right now,” I growled, my voice low yet not without threat. “None of you own me. None of you ‘claim’ me. This jealousy crap will stop right here and right now.”

“Hear, hear,” Pete commented, rubbing his head again.

“I said I was sorry,” Zavier said, defensive.

“I don’t care what you’ve said,” I snapped. “I want action.”

I turned my glare on both Pete and Nick. “That goes for you two also. We’re stuck here for the time being, together. That means we support each other, no one hits anyone. No one is jealous, or uptight, or pissy because you get your precious feelings hurt. If that asshat Simon finds out where we are, we can’t afford to be hateful to one another. You three are like brothers. Start behaving like brothers.”

Zavier nodded. “Yes, ma’am.”

I glowered down at Pete, whose blue eyes had grown so large I thought they’d fall out and tumble down his cheeks. “You’re the boss.”

When my face turned to Nick, he held both his hands up in surrender. “You’ve got my vote.”

“We’re not a family,” I went on, calming my anger. “But for now, we act like one. Comprende?”

“Sí,” Zavier replied, smiling like a little boy.

“All three of you need to grow up,” I muttered, stalking back around to Pete and kneeling beside his knee. “You all have the emotional maturity of six-year-olds.”

“Mommy, can I have a glass of milk?” Pete whined.
